TNI Visits El Salvador Alongside World Vision!

February 7th, 2013

Peachland, BC –  A select group of TNI Team members recently travelled to El Salvador alongside World Vision staff members to see first-hand the work World Vision does. TNI has had some great experiences with World Vision in our 10+ years working together, and we have been fortunate enough to see firsthand the wonderful work World Vision does in struggling communities.

In April of 2005, we took our first trip with World Vision to El Salvador, where we had the opportunity to tour the community of Tacuba, which is home to the TNI Employee Giving Fund’s first ever sponsored child, Nery Adalberto Gomez, and his family. Later in 2005 we took our second trip to El Salvador where we were able to see Nery and the community of Tacuba again. In addition, Christal Fenning, Owner of ACE Calgary, had the opportunity to be a part of that trip. It was on that trip where she took a picture of herself with a child in Tacuba, only to have a picture folder of that same child, Zaira, show up in her office weeks later. It was meant to be, and Christal and her husband began sponsoring her. These inaugural trips were an eye opener for all in attendance and, through their eyes, we had the opportunity to see why the programs offered by World Vision are so vitally important to these developing communities.

Now, 8 years later, Nery has grown up, our sponsorship of him has ended and the community of Tacuba has achieved self-sufficiency.  TNI saw this milestone as an opportunity to return to Tacuba one last time to visit with Nery and his family and see the final results of the World Vision projects in his community and throughout El Salvador.

The select group of attendees included Steve, Cheryl and Taylor Allison, Jenny Lecompte, Michael Dyck, and Christal and Michael Fenning. During their final visits with Nery, Zaira and their families, the group had the opportunity to see the direct impact World Vision has had in their lives and in the lives of those in the community.

The group’s first stop was to visit Christal Fenning’s sponsored child, Zaira.  For Christal, returning to Zaira’s home for the second time was even more eye opening than her first visit, in 2005.  Christal says, “It was amazing to see how much progress has been made, and how much World Vision does to help.”  She describes her second visit with Zaira as exciting!  Zaira was only 1 yearold when Christal first met her – now, Zaira is 8 years old and the visit was a major highlight of the trip for Christal!  She speaks fondly of the activities she did with Zaira, including touring her home, meeting her family, and playing games like soccer, badminton and football.

Next, the group had the opportunity to visit an orchard where the community grows a variety of different fruits.  Steve, Cheryl, Jenny, Mike, Taylor, Christal and Michael were able to meet with some of the farmers and hear their stories of how World Vision helped them.  The farmers explained that World Vision worked with them to implement different systems of farming in the most efficient ways possible.  The farmers explained their goals of developing and building an irrigation system for the orchard, as they currently water each tree individually with buckets of water that they have to carry in. These buckets are extremely heavy, which Mike Dyck and Michael Fenning can attest to, as they each took a turn hoisting them onto their heads!

Later that first day was a trek up into the mountains to see Nery and his family. The visit was a joyful experience as the group was able to see how much the Gomez-Castro family has changed in 8 years. They had a new baby boy, and their eldest daughter, now 19, had moved to a nearby community and was now married! Nery was no longer a little 8 year old boy, but rather a 15 year old young man who still aspires to be a police officer! This was Jenny Lecompte’s 3rd visit to see the Gomez-Castro family and she describes the visit as “… bittersweet. It was great to see the kids all grown up and the family doing well, but it was also sad to have to say goodbye. But knowing World Vision has given the community and families a solid foundation makes it easier to leave because we know they will continue to thrive.”

One of the projects World Vision helped implement in Tacuba is a fruit processing plant, which will contribute to the community’s ability to maintain self-sustainability in the future.  On the second day, the group had the opportunity to tour the fruit processing plant!  This fruit plant not only provides a year-round food source, but it also employs many people, allowing families in the community to earn a stable source of income each month. For those in attendance who travelled to El Salvador with TNI in 2005, it was an incredible experience to see how far this project has come.  In April of 2005, the group witnessed the early stages of this project, when World Vision was starting to teach the people how and why to dry their fruit.  The original fruit drying project was done in the back of a private home, with about 10 people.  Now, 8 years later, the plant has evolved drastically.  With the help of World Vision, the community now has a huge facility with equipment to make many various fruit products including jam and juice.    TNI’s final donation to the community of Tacuba was a grinder/pulp machine for the fruit plant, a needed piece of equipment that will allow the community to continue their growing success.

Later on the second day, the group visited the kids club in Jubileo.  Jubileo was previously ranked the 3rd most violent city in El Salvador when World Vision introduced the kids club.  The year following its opening, Jubileo had dropped in rank to the 14th most violent city.  This huge progress is due to the fact that the kids club provides a place for children of all ages to go after school where they can participate in different activities, just be kids, and even learn helpful life skills instead of falling into the violent lifestyle associated with gang activity.  The group visited with some of the older children who were learning skills such as t-shirt screening and baking!

Following the trip to Jubileo, the group travelled to Armenia to see a local Youth Empowerment Program – a program designed to give youth in the community a voice.  While visiting, the mayor of Armenia spoke to the group, telling our attendees how grateful he is for the help World Vision has brought to his community.  World Vision has only been in Armenia for a few years, but in that short time the community is already starting to see the differences as the community grows and evolves.

The final visit the group made was to a World Vision Entrepreneurship Program – a program designed to teach adults in the area how to save and budget their resources effectively, and helps people wishing to start their own businesses.  The Entrepreneurship Program was comprised of mainly women; women who used to struggle to make a living.  With the help of World Vision, these women have pooled their resources and now own a little store in which they sell their goods.

While on the trip, the group also had the opportunity to hand out mail to sponsored children from their sponsors.  At one point while the group was handing out mail to sponsored children, Taylor Allison met one little girl who was not being sponsored, and ended up sponsoring her herself on the spot.  They had the opportunity to colour, and just spend time together for a while.   Jenny Lecompte brought a bunch of baby “onesies” and the new mothers were elated to receive such a gift from someone they had never met before!  As the group continued on their adventure, they found a small rural school.  Unsure if it was even occupied as there was not a peep coming from it, they were excited to find there was a class in session of about 20 children!  The group had brought school supplies to share with the children and thoroughly enjoyed handing out books, pens, colouring supplies, globes and more to the very excited students who had no idea they were coming!

This trip to El Salvador has really shown why the work we all do is so critical in the success of those in underdeveloped nations.  We may take for granted the little luxuries we are each lucky enough to have: a roof over our heads, clothing on our backs, food on our tables...  For the group, seeing such drastic changes in the communities and people they first met in 2005 was not only amazing but heart warming.  And while it is sad that World Vision has finished their work in the community of Tacuba, the home of TNI’s first sponsored child, it also warms the heart because the community has achieved self sustainability.  They are now able to provide for their families, earn a living, and work towards achieving the goals of the community.

TNI Donates Big to a Canadian Legacy

September 20th, 2011

TNI Goes Batty for Bats and sponsors the Adopt a Bat program

February 24th, 2011

Peachland, BC- In the spirit of community development and support of the education on bats, TNI The Network Inc., has come on board as the Gold Sponsor of the Adopt a Bat Program, a commitment of $2,500."

The Adopt a Bat program initially started when the Peachland Chamber of Commerce decided their future home would be at the old school house on Beach Ave. in Peachland, and came across a bat community that had set up a “roost” in the roof of the building.  This started the process of putting the Adopt a Bat program into place and a chance for citizens and visitors of Peachland to learn more about bats.

The plan is for the Bat Station, at the old primary school, to be set-up as an interactive learning centre which will provide tools and live web streaming of the bats flying into and out of their “roost”. The learning centre will boast hands-on electronic tools to aid in learning more about the life of bats. The Chamber has sought out sponsorship to help cover the cost of the camera equipment and the up-keep of the bat community.

TNI is happy to sponsor such a great community program that not only is unique to Peachland, but will play a role in bringing the education of bats to the community, schools and tourists.  To learn more about this program and to see the bats live in their “roost” check out www.peachlandbats.ca.
